Our staff are fully CPI trained and certified!

Commitment to Safety and Development

Act Care proudly reinforces its commitment to safety, staff confidence, and professional growth through high-quality CPI (Crisis Prevention Institute) training. The organisation delivers this training as part of both induction and ongoing staff development.

CPI trainer Phil Durman leads intensive sessions for new and existing staff at Enidaso House. Registered Manager Laura McLaughlin oversees this programme to ensure consistent quality. Together, they equip staff with the skills needed to manage challenging behaviour safely and respectfully. As a result, every team member works in line with Act Care’s values and standards.

Training Overview

Act Care delivers CPI training over three consecutive days at the Holford Drive Community Sports Hub. Sessions run from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm.

This extended format allows staff to fully engage with the material. In addition, participants gain a deeper understanding of both the techniques and the philosophy behind crisis prevention.

A Tiered Approach to Crisis Prevention

The training follows a structured, step-by-step approach. Each level builds on the one before it.

  • Foundation Level introduces de-escalation strategies and proactive support.
  • Advanced Level develops physical intervention techniques for higher-risk situations.
  • Emergency Level focuses on team interventions and immediate safety measures.

As staff progress, they not only learn how to use each technique but also understand why each approach matters. Throughout the programme, trainers emphasise dignity, safety, and respect.

Interactive and Practical Learning

Act Care delivers training through hands-on and engaging methods. As a result, staff gain confidence quickly.

Sessions include:

  • Video demonstrations of CPI techniques
  • Live instruction from Phil Durman
  • Repeated practical exercises

Participants practise each technique several times. Consequently, staff leave the training ready to apply these skills in real-world settings.

Key CPI Techniques Practised

During the programme, staff learn a range of essential techniques. Each one focuses on safety, control, and respect.

Supportive Stance

Staff adopt a non-threatening posture. This approach helps reduce tension and encourages calm interactions.

Block and Move

Staff respond to physical strikes by redirecting movement safely. This technique helps maintain control without escalation.

Push and Pull Techniques

Staff use push and pull methods to disengage safely. These techniques create space and reduce the risk of harm.

Staff practise responses to several scenarios, including:

  • Wrist grabs
  • Clothing grabs
  • Hair grabs
  • Neck grabs
  • Body grabs
  • Bites

Through repeated practice, staff develop both confidence and competence.

Turning Away Technique

Staff learn how to disengage using controlled movement. This method includes three key steps:

  • Hold and stabilise
  • Push or pull to create space
  • Use leverage to break free

Trainers supervise each session closely. As a result, staff apply these movements in a calm and controlled way.

Emergency Interventions

In high-risk situations, staff must act quickly and safely. Therefore, the training introduces carefully controlled emergency techniques.

Supine Position

Staff use this intervention only when absolutely necessary. They support the young person on the ground while maintaining safety and reducing risk.

Low-Level Restrictions

Staff manage early escalation with minimal force. They position themselves carefully to prevent strikes while maintaining dignity and respect.

Medium and High-Level Restrictions

In more serious situations, staff work together as a team. They apply coordinated techniques to ensure safety for everyone involved.

Team Interventions

Teamwork plays a critical role during high-risk scenarios. Staff learn how to communicate clearly and move together.

For example, staff practise guiding a young person into a safe position and transitioning between standing, seated, and supine holds. They also learn how to move safely through doorways while maintaining control and dignity.

Commitment to Excellence

By the end of the training, staff feel confident and capable. More importantly, staff understand how to apply CPI principles with care and respect.

Act Care continues to prioritise both safety and development. Therefore, CPI training remains a key part of the organisation’s approach to high-quality care.

Every trained staff member contributes to a safer, more supportive environment. In turn, young people receive consistent, compassionate, and professional care.

CPI training does not just teach techniques. It builds confidence, strengthens teamwork, and reinforces Act Care’s commitment to excellence.
