At Act Care, we take pride in helping our Young People feel valued, recognised and celebrated. Marking important milestones is a core part of our ethos, especially when a Young Person transitions from childhood into adulthood. Birthdays are always special in our homes, but an 18th birthday carries an extra sense of significance. It represents both a coming of age moment and, for many, the beginning of a new chapter.
For this Young Person, the celebration was particularly meaningful. Alongside turning 18, it was also their leavers’ day as they prepared to return to their hometown and move into a new supported living placement closer to their parents.
To honour this incredible journey, Enidaso House went all out to celebrate. The entire home was decorated, thoughtful gifts were arranged and a giant birthday cake was provided, all funded by the company. The celebration was made even more special as their parents joined in and other Young People from the care homes took part in the festivities. Music filled the house, creating a warm and joyful atmosphere. When the time came, staff brought out the cake, which had candles spelling out the number 18, all lit and glowing. Everyone gathered together to sing Happy Birthday, making sure this Young Person felt truly seen, appreciated and celebrated on their special day.

We believe every Young Person deserves to feel valued. This celebration was not just about a birthday. It was a recognition of resilience, growth and the bright future ahead.

The Young Person also took an active role in preparing for the occasion by choosing a variety of food. They visited several places along Soho Road to pick up spring rolls and samosas, before heading to Costco to select pre‑made sandwiches, pre‑packed pastries, cookies, multiple bags of crisps, a platter of wraps with different fillings, salads and a fresh fruit platter that included watermelon, apples, grapes and more.

Here is a picture of the birthday cake they decorated and ordered for their 18th birthday celebration.

For gifts, they received a thoughtful selection chosen to match their interests and needs. These included new makeup sets, skincare products, makeup headbands, a new purse, chocolates, an electronic toothbrush and to mark the milestone, a special 18th birthday teddy bear.

This Young Person first came to Act Care in 2024 during an emergency crisis situation. At the time, they required a 4:1 staffing ratio due to high levels of distress, absconding and behaviours that their parents were unable to manage safely.
Over the past two years, however, their progress has been remarkable. By early 2026, staffing levels had reduced to 2:1 and incidents had decreased significantly. They have developed stronger communication skills, become more confident in expressing their feelings and gained practical independence, including cooking, cleaning their bedroom and bathroom and managing their own laundry.
This celebration marked far more than a birthday. It reflected the incredible progress this Young Person has made since arriving at Act Care and the dedication of the staff who have supported them every step of the way. From requiring intensive crisis support to becoming increasingly independent and confident, their journey is a testament to resilience, patience and the power of consistent, compassionate care. As they move forward into adulthood and settle into their new placement closer to family, we are proud to have been part of their story. Their 18th birthday was not only a joyful occasion, but a meaningful reminder of how far they have come and the bright future that lies ahead.
